Re: [RC] rabies and WNV - Colleen Egleston
Glad this was finally brought up. Last November, on my vet's advice I had
him vaccinate all four of my guys for rabies. Within five hours all four
has neuromuscular tremors, fevers ranging from 103.7-104.9, and were
severely depressed. I immediately called out the vet and she (other vet on
call) administered DMSO jugs to all of them, gave direct injections of
Banamine and we put a cold hose on all of their feet for 10-12 minutes. The
next day they were only slightly improved so we did the whole routine again,
on the third day, two of them had temps in the normal range and were doing
okay, the other two needed more Banamine. After about five days of pretty
intensive care and vet visits all my guys were fine. Luckily no one
foundered, although they do have fever rings.
Fort Dodge made the vaccine and the vet contacted them and the FDA
immediately, Fort Dodge paid for titers on the horses, and took their sweet
time investigating, I never did find out if it was a tainted vaccine. Fort
Dodge ended up paying for about 60% of the vet bill, the vet paid 30% and we
got stuck with 10%, I have a good friend who is an attorney, but I didn't
want to mess with it. Fort Dodge will NEVER have any of my business again.
I told another vet friend about this situation and he said he had just had a
dog die as a reaction to a Fort Dodge rabies vaccine, he had also had a cat
almost bite it with the same vaccine.
I never found out if the vial was tainted or what, Fort Dodge took FOREVER
to iron this thing out, and if I was the suing type, which I am not, I would
have sued their butts. I personally will never vaccinate my horses for
rabies again, with four big dogs roaming around, skunks, possums and
raccoons don't have much of a chance anyway. Hope this helps.
