    [RC] Helmets - Carolyn Burgess

Yup, it was, like a week ago. This thread has gone on along time. I wear a helmet, my husband doesn't. I have many friends who wear them, and in addition to my husband, I have two friends who don't. The ones who don't wear them state comfort and looks for not wearing them. I have one friend who actually has the a reason that she doesn't wear one that actually makes sense (sort of), it throws off her balance when she wears one. At hunter paces (we are in New England - all the rave here in the fall), she props one on her head, and doesn't latch the straps. She meets the spirit of the requirement for a helmet, but it is a sight watching that thing bob all over her head.

I wish I could get my husband to wear a helmet, but he is a cowboy and will only ride in a cowboy hat. The funny part is that he doesn't want me to ride without one. But he rides only very well broke horses, and I tend to ride and train difficult horses.

I am torn on the personal freedom issue with this though. I believe people should have the choice to do whatever they want, until their choice infringes on my choices. When you choose to ride without a helmet and are injured, your medical care increases the costs to my insurance premiums. However, there are those who sit in their houses watching TV and claim that my riding, even with a helmet, puts me at increased risk for injury, thereby increasing the cost of their insurance. I say that sitting in front of a TV increases your risk for a heart attack or stroke, and increases the cost of my insurance. So who is right? I'll continue to wear my helmet, and I would love to hear from the people who said that wearing a helmet causes injuries.

    Carolyn Burgess

Mea Culpea! I guess I missed the thread that says that people are killed because of wearing helmets. Was that said?
amber (this has been a long thread)
