Lif said,"In other words, to put it plainly, good riders
aren't likely to get dumped as often as bad."

It only takes one  bad
dump.

A very good cutter and reiner in this area
was working cows in the arena when somehow, the cow got up under her horse, she
fell and hit her head on something. Last time I read an update about her, she
still couldn't remember her kids names was not ambulatory, and had been in the
hospital for months. Excellent rider, no helmet.

In the video "Every time, Every ride"
put out by 4-H, I think, there are several stories of very good riders and one
or two trainers that will either never be the same, or just never be again.
Gone.

Someone at the fairgrounds this summer was
walking her horse into the arena on cement. Lots of ribbons in the past, very
well known instructor. The horse spooked reared, she fell off and hit her head.
Didn't make it though the night.

Exceptions? It happens all the time to all
kinds of riders in all disciplines. That is why it is considered a high risk
sport.

However, if someone doesn't want to wear a
helmet, they have every right not to. I once said I wouldn't ride with anyone
who didn't wear one. That pretty much excluded everyone I rode with. I changed
my mind. It is their business. I just pray every ride, that I don't have to make
that 9-1-1 call.

On the other hand, they could be calling for
me and I wear a helmet. I am not a trainer, have only a half of lifetime of
riding and have never been hurt bad. I think that is pure luck. Plus, it
will be a cold day in hell before I let Trainer Wendy see me come off in a bad
way. :) I would rather die, than to try and live that down!
