Re: [RC] an amatuer WNV question - Howard Bramhall

Talk to your vet in your area.  Mine is telling me to do it every 4 months, during the season, which is getting to be almost year round down here, especially if you believe in things like Global warming and El Nino.  I may not ever see another frost again the way things are going.

Anyway, I do think that's a bit overkill and can add up to big bucks if you have a lot of horses.  I do think I'll have it done again next spring, but I might wait till April and, hopefully, I'll be able to do it myself by then and save a few bucks.  We'll see.  A dead horse in your neighbor's back yard tends to let one know that the virus is definitely in your neck of the woods.

Like I said, talk with your vet, to get the most aggressive way to go, then, compare it with not doing anything at all, and pick something in the middle.  I don't think I'd even consider repeating the shot once every 4 months unless I lived in Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, or other flatland areas in the Southeast.  The price of the vaccine should eventually come down to something more reasonable than 20 bucks a pop.

I do think that using the vaccine, at least once, lessens the chances of your horse dying if they actually contract West Nile.  That's the info I'm getting out here on the front lines.  And, you won't find that on CNN.

    cya,
    Howard

OK, I've made an appt. to get my guys started with their WNV vaccines,
just getting too scarey out there and though I fought doing it,
something inside has been telling me its all blown out of proportion,
I'm just worried about the two old guys I have and the baby my fjord
mare is carrying and the fact that we're getting rain these last two
weeks and I am just now noticing sqeeters in the woods.  SO, if I
vaccinate now and the booster in 3 weeks, here in Missouri the mosquito
season is somwhere around June to sometime in September, will my guys be
OK through the mosquito season next year until their yearly shot again
in September?  Or will I need to booster again late spring before the
mosqito season?  Its suppose to be a yearly vaccine right?  thanks for
    your help.  Debby
