I would like to respectfully dissagree. The purpose of the rule in LD
including the recovery time in the ride time is to discourage overriding.
The race doesn't end until the pulse is down. On the other hand, if riders
were to be allowed to come in at 6 hours, and then take another 30 minutes
to recover, the required minimum speed would be decreased, significantly
lowering the conditioning and horsemanship required to do an LD.
At my rides I always warn those who are going slowly about this. The pace
is still slower than the usual CTR (6 mph, except on very hot days) pace as
used here in the midwest. Everyone also please note that because all rides
in the UMECRA country also have a CTR, most of the newer riders do the CTR.
The LD participants are (on the average) quite experienced and many ride
quite fast but sensibly.
