This could be mites... they are mites from wild birds,
and some horses
are more suceptible than others. These mites burrow under the
skin and most topical
insecticides don't work. itching is intense.. the poor horse.
These mites only infect
the follicle of the long hair of the mane &
tail.
Some years here in the NE we have problems, and other years we
don't.
You can use *liquid* ivermectin, put it on with a
pipette (a pipette is like a long plastic
eye dropper) right into the skin of the mane, then do it again
after 7 days (to kill the next egg hatch. 2 applications will kill
them.
You can also use the oral wormer QUEST on the skin of the
mane, but it's harder to apply
because it's a gel. Still have to do it
twice.
