Re: [RC] nail in hoof/soaking wounds - Ridecamp Guest

Somebody suggested soaking in hot water, epsom salkts and bleach. Sue Garlighouse has written here that they now teach in vet school never to treat a wound with anything you would not put in your own eye - that would rule out bleach!
This will gross some people out, so those who are not iinto body pericing HIT DELETE NOW.... I got my navel peirced awhile back (long story, mid-life crisis). Reputable peircers advocate salt-water soaks, using sea-salt (does not have the additives used in table salt to prevent caking). It works (as long as you keep up with it), and I have used this also to treat absesses on a cat, and it's how I'd treat any puncture wound. I use about 2 TBS per quart of water (hot as you can stand to keep your hand in), but I admit I don't measure very carefully.
Alchohol will kill cells, which slows healing and increases scarring: I'd bet bleach has a similar effect. Salt is all you need unless the would is really badly infected, in which antibiotics are called for.
