Re: [RC] Hay Question - Magnumsmom
I'm not going to address your protien question, but I am
in kind of the same situation here with a lack of grass
hay because of the fires and drought. It pushed me to
finally take steps to start adding beet pulp to Blue's
diet to stretch my hay budget. I mix it in with the
Complete Advantage he was already getting.
My feed store has pellets. I found that I soak them all
night with 4-5 times the volume of water to pellets. Also,
I found that adding 1 pound of pellets turned into a lot
of soaked beet pulp, more than was smart to start with.
Instead, Susan suggested we start with 1 cup soaked which
is about 1/4 pound of pellets. After Blue is used to the
1 cup per day, I'll start increasing it first by adding
the 1 cup morning and night and then by increasing to
2 cups... etc. as a forage replacement.
Blue will eat the beet pulp and Complete Advantage
before he digs into last year's timothy stash. Just an
idea to stretch hay this year. So far, so good.
