[RC] Cuddles - Magnumsmom
The point on the Jerry Lewis movie with Cuddles the
Hereford bull (he's adorable, you must see him), is that
the Hereford as a breed was bred to be easy to handle as
well as economical to raise and tasty to eat. Temperment
in Herefords atleast used to be as big a part of the breed
as their overall form.
My Holstein numbers came from my mid 80's UC Davis milk
production classes when atleast then it was shown that
producing gallons was the most economical way to go even
if the butterfat suffered... the number of gallons won
out in the long run. Thus the selection for gallons only,
thus the increase in size and the increase in size of the
bulls, and the bulls ending up being not just unpredictable,
but out right dangerous as it was uneconomical to also try
to select for bulls with Cuddles' temperment.
Which is getting way off topic except that temperment is
a big deal in endurance horses. Personally, I really like
my big puppy dog straight egyptian. Oh, and Magnum's dam
also threw good natured sweet foals that tended upon just
enough dominance to also win on a race track. Genetics,
but also environment... being raised by a good mare.
Lisa, you win in the cow department hands down. Cheers,
:) - Kathy Myers
