[RC] Tevis Protests - Joan Dowis
I have gotten the idea from some posts that some people think there are no
protests at Tevis. Protests are encouraged if a rider (or anyone else for
that matter) has observed unsportsmanlike conduct, horse abuse, etc. There
is no fee for filing a protest; the protest must be given in writing to the
Cup Committee before its meeting on Sunday morning to be considered prior to
the awards ceremony. The handwritten protest may be handed in to any Tevis
board member Saturday night or Sunday morning before 10 a.m. and it will get
to the Cup Committee. Board members are easy to find at the stadium Sunday
morning; there are 40 of them, and most of them will be around.
Anyone may write a letter to the Tevis office after the ride if there is a
problem he or she wishes to bring to the board's attention. Any such letter
will be read by all board members and given due consideration at the next
board meeting.
Each year, there are usually written protests filed, and letters received
after the ride at the office. As far as protests, this year was no
different. I'm sure we will receive letters also.
If sanctions are imposed against a rider, there is a broad range possible,
including but not limited to loss of position at finish (that is, dropped to
the last of the list), disqualification from Haggin Cup contention,
disqualification from completion, and banning from future rides. The
severity of the sanction may well depend on the number and detail of the
protests submitted. If you have something to protest, do it!
