That depends on how much you ride in them of course.
I've got over 500 miles on a couple and have worn the
bottoms out of a couple with just 275 miles in the
mountains at Timberon, NM. The screw-holes broke on a
brand-new EB at Shamrock and I *think* on another EB
the next day. (I had to do some work on them to get
them to fit Charlie's narrow foot...they came from the
    factory better than that.)

I don't like EB alone since I ride in various
tarrains. If I just slip an EB on over a shoe, it'll
stay. However, if I loose a shoe and put an EB on,
I'll loose it if I'm not careful.

I take it he doesn't have shoes on now? Why is he
sensistive? Did the other farrier quick him? If he's
tender footed, then he'll need some protection all the
time. Going barefooted has it's place...some say bare
is better. Is your gelding used to going barefooted?
If not, it may just take some getting used to for him.
Also, if you're doing a lot of work on his hooves,
the change may be making him sore. If this is the
case, give him some time before making your decision.

EB are always good to have on hand. If the gelding
needs major work on his hooves, take it easy on the
conditioning - you *could* do more damage than good
depending on the condition of his feet.

Probably longer than shoes...depending on the terrain.
However, also consider the condition of your horse's
feet. You'd have to wear the EB conditioning. Would
he do any damage to his sensistive hooves at home?

Many folks let their horses run barefoot and do wear
EB at rides and home on conditioning rides if
appropriate. My question to you is based upon the
angle of his hooves, WHY his feet are sensistive, and
WHY his hooves need *major* reconstruction.

That quarter crack may require a shoe in order to keep
it under control. I wonder if the shoe make him
sensistive or the farrier (which ever one) cut him too
    close or perhaps quicked him.
