Rascal did the same thing at first, now he only does it occasionally. I had to do alot of walking and remounting. He would follow me on ground but refuse to go forward. I also took grain with me and fed him , "on the trail" , later I let him graze, (no grass at home to speak of.)I had to dismount at every puddle, and gave him a carrot piece of he went thru. Eventually he went out alone. I also practice him giving to the bit, and back , forward, left right exercises at home. sometimes we just circle If I think it's just stubbornness. But sometimes I think he is just not confident, because he will follow me past any obstacle.(We only have occasionally spin and dash for home and I do circles or turna nd go backwards again, and make sure we get home and go work in the ring or stand tied for 20 min. if he was"naughtly". And I never feed him right after I get home(learned this mistake the hard way).l The first couple times we went out it wasn't riding it was hiking with me leading, (got a few shin splints on these hills). Hope this may help. My 9 year old Arab gelding does not like to go out by himself. He's just fine with others, but when I take him out here at home by ourselves, he tries to turn around (AKA spook and spin) every couple of minutes. He spooks at clumps of grass, gates we've seen 50 times- anything. He can be very stubborn. I had a similar battle with him loading into a 2 horse trailer (I won that one). It's getting very frustrating. Any ideas?
