[RC] Amatuer Hoof Trimming.... - kathy . mayeda
Last year I kept Drako's hooves pretty well trimmed by
myself. I have a very sharp hoof knife and a very good
rasp. I would just pare away the dead hoove material a
little at a time, and then rasp the hoof wall down and
around the hoof edges to smooth the chips out. I did
this every two weeks or so for a few months. Wasn't
hard to do at all, but it helps to be a hoof angle and
symmetry fanatic like I am with a horse that has pretty
balanced hooves to begin with like Drako's.
HOWEVER I AM NOT COMFORTABLE WITH THE NIPPER. I HIRE MY
FARRIER TO DO THAT PART! Which I did in April because I
didn't keep up with the trimming. And the pasture was
drying out which caused a little havoc on his hooves.
I took a barefoot trimming clinic with Debbie Dutra and
quicked the cadaver hoof right away. I'm not going to
buy myself nippers unless I get further educated on hoof
trimming. But then again, I might just end up paying
the farrier anyway and save a few of my brain cells for
other uses.
