Or, if your creative juices aren't flowing and you have blisters on your scissors hand, you can buy a pair of cages ready to mount for $10.00 from us here at EasyCare.

Speaking of caged stirrups. I wanted some, but already had some aluminum easy ride and being a pennypincher I decided to retrofit mine. Since I have plantar facidas(spell) and metatarsial something or other I have feet problelms and need all the help I can get.(oh and the 2nd degree ankle tear, and inheritated weak ankles to begin with and I use d to do track)(Following the shoe/boot thread too, as my ariats are dying and they really don't work for lots of walking, climbing.)
So I had my husband drill holes down the sides and two in the bottom right under the front . I bought 1/4 round head screws and , acorn nuts. I bought heavy webbing like you see on straps on horse blankets(fabric store, walmart or Home Depot type store , in automotive too, you can use "tie down" straps )I then made an x with the straps and also placed a piece horizontal------ across the bottom and top and sewed it with uphostrey thread (again wallmart or fabric stores) back and forthe tons of times. I then burned the edges to seal them (candle) and used my sons sodeiring iron to burn holes in them . I then screwed the webbing spider web to the stirrups.
Now be sure to cut the webbing long. I made a mistake and cut my first ones too short and couldn't double it under the screws like I wanted, (burn two holes and double it if you want extra strength. Mine are on the second hole because I didn't cut the webbing long enough. Cut all the pieces first and pin or tape them together to make sure the cage is bulgie enough for your toe. Should cost about 3-7.00$ You could use salvaged webbing from an old horse blanket, straps , etc.Make sure you tighten down with pliers and screwdriver, could use lock tight if you are sure they fit.
Beats 95.00 for new stirrups.
