That is an excellent suggestion. I was going to
say that too, but figured ppl would laugh. Goats milk is the best and the
Nubians and other milking goats are wonderful temperments and could adapt to
this quite well. Don't worry, the babies will get on their knees to nurse. Most
Does freshened this past March so if you could go to a Dairy Farm that is
milking, you could pick up a couple of Does. Plus, you can make the best cheese
for yourself. Goat milk is the only milk I can stand to drink, I also give it to
my baby llamas if there is a problem with the mother. Also FYI, if ever you have
a foal that can't nurse to get the colostrum, Goat Colostrum is excellent as a
replacement. Much better than Cow Colostrum. You can buy it from the goat
dairies and freeze it. Just don't put it in the microwave to thaw. Anyone that
is breeding should have this in their freezer. It lasts for a
year.

Did you ever think
about using a goat? In the book "Blessed Are The Foals," they suggest this
as an alternative to using an (expensive) nurse mare. The goats are great
companions, their milk is very rich, and they don't seem to mind nursing
foals. However, you would probably also want to put the orphans with a
gentle gelding or older mare (along with the goat) so the babies could learn how
to be horses. Just a suggestion.............
