    Re: [RC] Ponying - Sullivan

I have a Western sport saddle I use for ponying, and I pony a lot. I take
two wraps around the horn, and hold the part that comes off next to the part
that goes to the horse in my hand. If I have my hand closed, all the pull
goes to the horn; If I opened my hand any or relaxed my grip, the whole rope
would just run through....there is NOTHING attatched or hitched to the
saddle, big safety point. Yes, you can pony off an english saddle, but
prepare for you arm to get jerked off if the ponied horse is not well
trained (how I almost ruined my elbow) I try to keep the ponied horse next
to me (head by my hip), but can allow the line to slide longer for narrow
    places or obstacles

The recent sad mountain lion story (riders' horses spooked by a mtn lion
while ponying a horse, got dragged off her saddle when ponied horse ran in
from of her) leads me to ask: what is the safest way to pony a horse?
Should there be some mechansim to allow for the line to break under extreme
pressure? How long should the line be? Other safety tips? Also, how can
you pony with an english saddle (no horn)?

Just a hypothetical question for me, as (so far) I only have one beasty.
