[RC] pigeon fever - Ridecamp Guest

Hi:
A year and a half ago, my four year old gelding developed internal pigeon fever. We waited for about one month for it to come to an abscess. It never did on the outside. So off to Davis he went. We were able to verify he had the disease by blood tests, but were not able to locate the abscess, tried every method possible. The vets figured it was up in his back cavity (kidneys, liver, etc) and hidden. So he got very sick and rundown. We treated him with Naxcel for two months at Davis and I continued the treatment one more month. So, $2,600 later in vet fees, his blood tests come clear, but we know he has an abscess somewhere inside him, which could cause future problems. The treatment just forms a waxy shell around the abscess and there is possiblity of future leaking. Also, a rarity, the bacteria from the pigeon fever caused a lesion on his heart which caused him to develop a heart murmur. So Davis has told me he may have "exercise intolerance" because of this. Also, another rarity, he was alleric to the bacteria, so when it developed inside him, his legs swelled up HUGE. He got so uncomfortable with his legs, that he would only walk backwards. So, now a year and a half later, he is fine but I may just let him be a pasture pal and every six months I have the vet draw blood to see if the bacteria is present. So far he is clear. Internal pigeon fever is really serious and nasty stuff to try to resolve.
Mary
