    Dr. Fahy,

Back in the early 70's, when I first started hearing about endurance (and I
was in elementary school at the time), my father told me that just 'messing
around', he could cover 35 miles a day riding. This was without any
conditioning other than 'just riding'. I'm assuming he'd stop periodically
to let the horse graze, stretch his legs, make a "pit stop" and eat
something. These were horses at grass, "Heinz 57-types", maybe on minerals,
no grain, don't know about worming, doubtful veterinary care, etc. That's
why he said he wasn't surprised that someone could get on a horse and ride
50 miles a day if they worked at it (but he thought 100 miles/day was a
stretch...). If he was still alive, he'd probably be one of those
    60-somethings out riding endurance.
