[RC] The Aging Equine Athlete! - KathyZ1

I just remembered this, but didn't the guy who came in 2nd at Tevis last year ride a small, older mare?
I remember I was thrilled when I read this.  I seem to remember she was 14 hands?  I can't remember the name of the man...although I do remember it was an unusual name...a food... (Potato??) >shrug<.
Does anyone know how big this guy is??  Just curious since he apparently rode such a little mare so well.
Does anyone know the history of these two?

    Also....
You folks who ride or know older horses in competition, I was thrilled. too to see that there are so many older horses out there.
How about sharing your nutrition and training strategies for the older horse.
How do these strategies compare to training the horse who is in his prime?

With Elmer Bandit being 31 years old (he's the horse who started this thread), he's certainly outlived his teeth by many miles.  Is beet pulp the answer here?  What else?

    Thanks,
    Kath
