One thing that has worked on abcesses for me is to
hot soak them. Put a couple of inches of sand in the bottom of a bucket, add
enough very warm (as hot as you can stand to keep your hand in) water to
cover the affected area and soak as long as the water is hot twice a day for
several days. They usually break out at the hairline around the second soak. My
horses have always been sound (or at least obviously more comfortable) after
that. Then you are only treating an open wound. Keep soaking for a couple more
days and put the yellow stuff on it in between (nitrofurozone?). Oh, the sand
keeps the water warmer longer.
I have had vets 'cut out' the abcess through the
sole of the foot, but that takes weeks to heal completely IMO. And they look
miserable the whole time.
Good luck,
Maggie Pritchard
Could it be an abcess? Putting an icthamol wrap
on his foot for up to 48 hours could draw it out if thats the problem.
