I'm also a newbie, haven't done a ride yet, but am looking forward to my first one this fall (keeping my fingers crossed, I've said this before).  I have heard this talk on and off over the years, and it has scared me a time or two also.  The thing is, I've been volunteer and crew, and have never run into one person that was rude on purpose.  Most riders are happy to have the volunteers look after them, and are always courteous.  I haven't been on trail, but haven't heard any horror stories from any of my close friends that do endurance either.  I think most problems stem from ignorance and most riders are tolerant of that, and are willing to give the benefit of the doubt.

What you hear on this list, are a few isolated incidents, and that's why everyone is in an uproar.  I would say these incidents are not the norm, and hopefully never will be.
