Susan--I'm curious--did you figure out what the supplements cost the owner
per day versus what the pasture costs would have been? I'm willing to bet
she had chosen the more expensive option by going the supplement route.
IMO, the loss of condition due to not having the animal on pasture was
expensive enough, but with some people you have to reduce this sort of issue
to dollars and cents to make a point. Even then, it doesn't always work.
As we've both pointed out before, there's no substitute for starting a
ration with quality forage and building it from there. In this respect,
it's like people who have terrible eating habits that down handfuls of
supplements daily to make up for the poor diet. It's amazing the number of
parallels you can draw between feeding horses and feeding humans.
