[RC] Grass Founder ??, My Hysterectomy ??, Bug Spray!! - Larry and Helen McMaster

    Hello Ridecampers,

Although we keep the horses in the paddock all night with lots of free
choice hay, Ember, my endurance mare has foundered. She is not in a
lot of distress, (normal stance and some movement) but is shifting her
weight from foot to foot at times. Because of the long, cold spring
the horses have only had grass for a month, and we have been very
careful to introduce them to it slowly. Our local vet, who's specialty
is dairy cows is not up on the latest treatments. I have heard that
aspirin is recommended in the early stages, but can not find the info
now that I need it - can any of you help?? Thanks. We did not let
her out on grass this morning, but she is outside, and we will stop the
handful of oats she got in the evening when we put then all in for a few
    minutes to check them over.

Next topic - 5 weeks ago I had a hysterectomy. I am sure some of the
women on this list have been there, and I am wondering how long it was
before you could ride again? My doc is not a rider and has put the
fear of god in me with stories of people who have had to go back for
repairs - I sure don't want that! I know I won't be doing any rides
    this season, but pleasure rides?

For those of you who make your own bug spray, the May/June issue of
Organic Gardening has an article stating that Catnip is '10 times more
effective for keeping mosquitoes at bay than DEET' and 'the natural
compounds- distilled from catnip- makes mosquitoes buzz off'. Might be
worth trying, although if it attracts cats, not in some regions after
the tragedy caused by the mountain lion.

    Thanks for any help,
    Helen McMaster,
    Ontario, Canada
