Can't speak to the percentages, but I know a lot of riders have little
choice in the matter. I personally prefer to stay (unless I live right down
the road, in which case, I agree with the posters who've stated that the
trip home is minimal stress compared to the advantage of having the horse
rest in his own environment--but in which case I tended to return for awards
when I lived in an area where the rides were that close to me), but have had
my share of "no choice" times. We used to have a whole group of ladies in
Oregon that had jobs where if they got Saturdays off, they had to work
Sundays, and they invariably came in after dark on Fridays, rode either the
LD or did slow 50's, and then loaded up and went home. They always called
to let us know they'd be in late, and were gracious if the accommodations to
vet them in late were less than ideal. As a RM, I always appreciated their
support of my rides, and as a ride vet, I never saw them have horses in any
sort of difficulty that would have precluded a 3-4 hour trailer ride.
