Sarah,
A vet will let you start just fine with windpuffs, bad scars, you name it
so long as the horse isn't lame.
I just have one little bit of advice for you on this mare. When I was 15
I'd gotten to old to ride a pony and didn't have a horse. A man loaned me
an unbroke AQHA 2 year old filly and said if I decided to buy her it
would be $300. Since I wanted to ride pretty darned bad I had her
"broke" (I could get on and point he somewhere) within days and by the
end of the summer she'd been over mountains through water, loaded in
trailers, and stood for shoes. The man came by to check on her and said,
"Good job, if you decide to buy her she'll be $650" I was furious but it
was a lesson learned. Why go through all this grief for a horse who is
apparently not very much fun and isn't even yours?
You may be a person who likes a challenge, I don't know... but I could go
find several young unbroke Arabs cheap right now that I'll bet I could
have going pretty well before you get that mare over her "issues". If
you like a challenge, and it makes you feel good to reclaim a horse, more
power to you. I like to "reclaim" one in advance...before it hits the
skids because it reaches age 8 and is only halter broke.
