Just a little bit of trivia (dug up following the
comment that Skowronek was the "foundation sire" of Crabbet, while I wait for
irrigation water.....)
The following list of stallions were used at
Crabbet as founding male lines--this is not a complete list by any means.
I've included their birth years:
Kars (1874)
Pharoah (1876)
Hadban (1878)
Azrek (1881)
Mesaoud (1887)
Merzuk (1887)
Mahruss (1893)
Feysul (1894)
Ibn Yashmak (1902)
Many of the above stallions had very prominent sons
and grandsons which were also used extensively at Crabbet, including the
following (to name only a few):
Rijm (1901--by Mahruss)
Nureddin (1911--by Rijm)
Daoud (1899--by Mesaoud)
Astraled (1900--by Mesaoud)
Rustem (1908--by Astraled)
Harb (1901--by Mesaoud)
Seyal (1887--by Mesaoud)
Berk (1903--by Seyal)
Rijm (1901--by Mahruss)
Rasim (1906--by Feysul)
These second and third generation Crabbet stallions
are likewise just a drop in the bucket relative to their overall
program.
So where does Skowronek fit into this? He was
not even foaled until 1909, and was not even imported into England until
1913. By the time he came on the scene at Crabbet, most of their program
was at least second generation, in many cases third generation, and in a few
cases even 4th and maybe 5th generation. Hope this clears up the question
as to whether Skowronek was a "founding" sire at Crabbet.... Nonetheless,
he provided a useful outcross for Lady Wentworth, although as I previously
mentioned, she maintained a Skowronek-free breeding group til she
died.
