[RC] Building A Tack Cabinet - Cheryl Ann

    Hello All -

Last fall I posted about an idea I had to make a simple, walk-in tack cabinet. Well, almost six months later, it's done!  Not that it took six months to build, but rather, six months to get to the day-and-a-half to build it :>). It's been sitting in Dad's garage in sections, being in the way.

Well, I just love this thing; dust-free storage, YAY!

    Here's the Saga -

    1. Initial thought - buy plywood and 2x4s to build a simple 4x4x8 cabinet to store my saddles, w/ a bridle rack and a shelf or two. Put caster wheels on it.

    2. Opportunity knocks (or gets delivered) - a nice sturdy shipping crate arrives at my plant, 4x6x6. Wait a few weeks till they open it, then cart it home. Bigger is better, and free! Might not be pretty, but it will work.

    3. My lucky day - another crate comes in, this one bigger yet. I claim it and wait for it to be opened, only this time, it got butchered and the only thing salvageable was the top, which they had Sawzalled off in one piece 5x8.  3/4" plywood with 2x4 "rafters" on 12" center. hmmm.... that would make a nice strong floor.... I'll take it.

    4. Dad and my Uncle "needed" a "little" project - I was going to make this myself (honest!), but work schedules have changed... ;>)

They combined the two different crates, I bought a couple extra sheets of plywood and some extra 2x4s, hardware and light fixtures, and less then two days later, voila - I now have a really nice, Really Big (5x8x7)cabinet (basically a small shed), with built-in saddle racks, built-in shelves, blanket bars, coat rack & mirror, light fixtures, carpeted floor, luan "siding", and a nice lockable door. They will take it all apart in sections and haul it to the barn in the a.m, I've got a space all cleared out for it. It will be inside the barn.

We did elect not to go with the casters, as Dad and Uncle couldn't really see "anyone" pushing this thing around anytime soon...

Just thought I'd let you all know, can't wait to fill it up tomorrow!

    Take Care -
