        This might be the problem.  Training in front.  So when your at a ride...he's not in front and that will cause an increase of heart rate. Most horses want to be in the front, this is a very common statement we've heard over and over with horse owners through the years of training endurance horses.  So while your working on conditioning...work on that also.  Just a suggestion & it might help both of you.
