In Angie's case, it was for safety reasons (and protecting plans for
upcoming rides), the horse wasn't having any problem.
I once pulled at the halfway point of a 50 mile ride with a perfectly
fit horse. It was before I got my contact lenses, and it was raining
steadily. I couldn't see the trail markers and kept getting lost. At
the 25 mile vet check there were no riders behind me, and I figured
we'd already covered 40 miles due to getting lost. I'd had a minor
injury from falling while leading down a muddy hill. I pulled due to
the risk of getting lost again and spending the night out on the
mountain in the rain (or worse).
Another time Kahlil just didn't "feel right." Also, he wasn't
drinking, which was abnormal. At the 25 mile check he passed all his
parameters, and the vet cleared him to go, but I decided to pull -- I
couldn't put my finger on it but I knew *something* wasn't right.
About a half-hour after the time we'd have gone back out, he coliced
in his pen. With vets right there, he received immediate treatment
and had no lasting effects -- if we'd gone back out on the trail, who
knows?
