Considering that it is natural for horses to eat on the ground, I can't
blame them in the least for pulling hay in particular out onto the ground to
eat. There are many advantages to having the horse eat on the ground,
ranging from proper development of neck muscles, proper wear of teeth,
avoiding respiratory problems of overhead or enclosed feeders, etc. We
solved the problem of tromping feed into the mud by simply hauling in dirt
with a lot of gravel in it and building a raised area along the area where
we fed in each pasture that would drain and stay firmly packed, so that we
were feeding the horses on relatively dry, firm ground.
