Re: RC: Re: P&R vet check treatment
I just got back from helping check in horses for the Region 13 (think it's)
championship CTR which is taking place at a ride on the Cross FL Greenway. It is
a SEDRA ride and under SEDRA rules horses have to have their pulse and
respiration and temps taken at the check in. What I relearned is the respiration
- especially resting - is the most difficult to take and the most useless
parameter going. One horse held his breath for about 30 seconds when another
horse walked by. Well if used that count would I write "dead" on the forms.
Another was just sort of breathing shallow - didn't have to do anything else
since he hadn't done anything and was actually inverted since his pulse was 28!
All the horses that check in between 2 and 4 were 16 to 24 and all the horses
that checked in after it started to get cool were 8 to 12.
For grins and giggles I took it for the same horse three different 30 second
periods while he was standing there. One time 8, one time 24 and the third 16.
So what the heck does that mean?
I think repiration is a valid indictor for a vet to consider, but as a pure
number it seems to be pretty much worthless.
