Re: Survey: Riding mares
Since I've riden endurance, the horses I've OWNED & competed on have been
geldings (until recently). However, I started riding Genie Wunderlich's
Grand Drubaska (a mare) back in the early 90's and put in lots of miles on
her. Early in our "relationship", a number of people asked why I didn't
just go ahead & buy the mare from Genie, since I was riding her so much. My
answer: her nickname was (and still is) "Bitsey the Bitch" - she was
wonderful to ride, but I didn't want her in MY pasture!
A couple of years ago, I ended up buying a mare (through Genie) because she
just seemed "so sweet". We started doing 50 mile rides together last spring
& I'm enjoying every minute of it... I think mares tend to be more
independent than geldings & tend to take better care of themselves on the
trail. (And even tho' she's awful "sweet", she's showing a bit of a
competitive side...)
