I own one of these.  It basically works like a Bosal, which doesn't
provide the control of a hack.  The Bosal (or Vosal) is not intended to
be a control device.  It has kind of a covered weight where the normal
Bosal knot would be.  I did a couple of rides in it.  Although it works
great just out trail riding, I found that the covered weight rubbed the
hide off the chin bones when he's really pulling on me, so I went back
to an S-hack. There's a pretty good article on Bosals in Equus this
month.

Sounds like the best choice here would be to fix the problem with your
mare grabbing the hackamore....don't really see how she does that
anyway. Are you using a long shank hack?  Might want to try the Arabian
S-hack...doesn't have the long shanks for her to grab.
