Re: Re: Re: AERC and charges
We wanted riders to have more freedom of choice. We discussed the fact that
some organizations, including sports organizations, require membership in
order to participate. But we believed that riders should have the right to
choose. However, in order to cover the costs of keeping their competition
records, we levied the one-day member fee, or non-member fee, however you
look at it. There are a number of people who do only one or two rides a
year, and it isn't cost effective for them to join. I do believe, however,
that if a person is going to reap the benefits of an organization, he or she
should be willing to support it with dues. We belong to a couple of
horsemen's groups that we don't attend, but do support with our dues. And I
also don't buy the "AERC dues are too high" stuff. Considering what some
people pay for little luxuries and conveniences here and there, $65 a year
is nothing. At 5,000 members in at least two countries, AERC has some
political clout, especially in lobbying to save trails. And also, consider
what has been learned about the metabolics and mechanics of the horse put to
long distance stress. If it hadn't been for endurance riding, little of
this would have come to light and be subject to research.
