Re: dead mare at NASTR
This is not to trivialise what was clarly a horrible incident , but ....Im a
bit perplexed by the horses on IV thing. I (rather obviously) know the main
cause for it , i.e. the need to pump fluids into the horse after
dyhydration. What I dont understand is when its neccessary on an ostensibly
very fit, well ridden horse.
I have wittnesed it a few times in the UK, where we do occassionally get hot
weather. What I found very strange is that my big , heavy cob competing in
the same class in weather he finds hard to tolerate had only minor tenting
of the skin at the end of a fast hot ride. He also sweats like a pig. Im not
the greatest rider in the world ( still learning all the time).
It sort of makes me wonder if some bloodlines are more prone to tieing up
and /or dyhydration than others. I wonder if anyone can think of a way of
maybe checking this statistically?
