Am I on the right track?
I bought my mare with the intention to do dressage and CTR with her, but
between saddle fit/chiro/whatever issues, and just teaching her how to be a
riding horse, we've gotten a little side tracked. So...
* In general, what do I need to do to get ready for a CTR or LD with my mare?
* What changes/additions to our routine would you recommend?
* What time frame would you consider reasonable for attempting our first 25
or novice CTR?
Here's the scoop:
I bought Stella in October, 2000. She'd had a couple months of
ground/undersaddle work as a 3yo and had lived on a hillside pasture her
whole life.
Stats:
5 year old Arabian mare
~14.3hh (maybe a little smaller)
~900 lbs (maybe a little bigger)
keg shoes on front, barefoot behind
Living Arrangement:
3/4 acre dry pasture
1-2 other horses
Feed:
~10 lbs. pellets (60% alfalfa, 40% oat)
~10 lbs. oat hay
Supplements:
Platinum Performance (multi vitamin/mineral)
3500 mg glucosamine HCL
2500 mg chondroitin sulfate
Training Since October:
5-6 days week riding
~1 hour/session
alternate between WTC arena work, trail obstacles, WT trail rides
once/week dressage lesson
Trails:
2 mile loop w/varied terrain
one moderately steep climb ~700 ft. long
we do this at least a couple times a week
-or-
1 mile up/1 mile back
steady, moderate climb/descent
we've only done this one a handful of times due to saddle fit issues

Any comments/suggestions are welcome!
