RE: Re: Rider knee surgury

My arthroscopy was in the early 1980's for a torn ACL, so it existed
at that time. I guess it helped that the clinic I went to is
associated with Stanford Medical School and treats a lot of the
professional athletes who live in Atherton! I agree that the
recovery will probably be faster anyway, because since my leg was
immobilized in a cast, it built up a lot of scar tissue. Breaking
the scar tissue during physical therapy afterwards was the most
painful experience I ever had in my life - worse than the injury
itself. They don't usually do a hard cast anymore.

Hi, Suzanne,

I had an ACL replacement and meniscus repair in January, 1991, when the
ACL
required open knee surgery. It was six months before I was cleared to
ride,
and it took most of that time just getting my knee back to having normal
function, straightening, muscle retraining, etc. I did Tevis the next
summer (1992). Now, the surgery is arthroscopic, and recovery is much
faster. My doctor was an athlete himself, and was very helpful in
encouraging me to return to activity. If possible, go to a doctor who
does
surgery on athletes - athletes definitely use the best available. Good
luck.
