Equine dentist vs Vet?

We are getting ready to take our horses in for their annual shots, etc.
For the past two years, we've used an equine dentist for the teeth but
find it very expensive compared to a veterinarian.  How often do you all
have your horses' teeth checked; once a year or only when they appear to
be dropping grain?  Do most of you use a vet or an equine dentist?
