RC: Salt

1 tablespoon of white iodized salt (sodium chloride)
weighs 18 grams (g).
Red mineralized weighs pretty close to the same, and "lite"
salt (potassium chloride) weighs a tad less.
Depending on the reference cited, the horses daily requirement
for salt (while idle) is between 20 - 50 g.
That's 1 to 3 tablespoons.
If your wondering how I seem to know this.... I just went thru
a series of blood tests on one of my horses who was iodine
deficient, and also low in chloride.
Using a apothacary scale, I've weighed out the various salts
& converted ppm to mg for sodium, potassium, chloride & the
micro-elements in red salt for the proper maintenance mix for this guy.
So, 1 TBS is NOT too much daily salt.
Of course fresh water at all times is important, and as long as that's
available the toxic level for salt is amazingly high...... something
like 1.5 cups.
The crystals on the hair-coat have to be something else.
(unless the horses are running at nite and it's dried sweat
but I'm sure you know what that looks and tastes like).
