If you traveled at a speed of 4 1/6 miles per hour it would take you 24 hours
riding time.  Considering any vet checks holds of say 3 hours, you would be
over time by about 3 hours. So while the "average speed" including holds is 24
hours per 100 or 4 16 mph, one needs to maintain a speed of about 5 mph on the
trail to finish.

This is what I think the original poster had in mind.
