I read somewhere sometime that if you can see one rat/mouse there are 50 more that you cannot see!

Good advice to her, because the presence of that many hungry rats could be a bigger problem - disease, for instance.  That many rats in a stable means rats outside and in nearby areas.  Not good.

Meanwhile, I'd try painting some hot pepper oil on the hooves and chestnuts, keeping in mind that when the rats can't chew there, they might find somewhere else to chew that would be worse.

Seems to me there'd have to be an awful lot of rats for a horse to let itself be chewed on [shudder].
