RE: fractured splint
I had a horse years ago that received a kick from a mare that fractured his
splint bone. The vet recommended not doing surgery immediately as the splint
bone easily develops calcification. He was right. In about the time it takes
for the average "splint" to go thru the painful lameness period, this
fracture healed and attached to the main cannon bone (name?) just like a
typical "splint" without invasive surgery. He said that if it had been
displaced he would have gone for surgury. This was not an endurance horse
but he may as well of been for all the long fast miles I put on him up in
the mountains. My brother is still riding him at 26 yrs old and he has never
been lame other than the splint episode.

Subject: RC: fractured splint
I found out yesterday that my horse has a fractured splint bone and she's
scheduled for surgery Nov 1. Has anyone had this happen to an endurance
horse? How did it go?
