Well, here's the clue. They are good horses, decent ones anyway, and they
never see the inside of a barn. They live in a large steep pasture!

And another clue is I learned how to be efficient when I ride them by letting
them do what I did when I was trying to grow into an ultra runner. We usually
walk up all hills - briskly - and jog down, doing a fast trot or easy canter
on the sorta flat stuff.

I have top tenned in medium sized rides doing this and hanging out at vet
checks. Don't waste energy, don't push hard on the hills, change the gait
often.

Works for me!
