RideCamp@endurance.net
toddler riding-comments from Brenna Sullivan
Dear ridecamp,
When I was eight, I did a limited distance
ride. It took a great amount of work to prepare for the ride, such as
learning how to feed, water the horse correctly, take care of it, and riding
lots of miles.
I think 3 year olds are not smart enough to
understand the concept of taking care of horses and if you want to get involved
in the sport, I believe you should know a lot about horses and how to take care
of them. Even when I was 8, the ride was hard, even on my trusted
pony.
When I was 3, we got the pony. It was hard
for me to even ride around in a paddock, let alone do a trail ride. As for
the "exceptional" 3 year old, he should not be riding endurance rides until he
learns how dangerous horses can be. He is too young to make his own decisions on
what he wants to do.
Back to lurking,
Brenna Sullivan, AERC member, age 13
