Linda, I don't use them unless I have a horse who is interfering after the farrier didn't get things quite level. (Happened a few times with new guys.) Splint boots & SMB will not necessarily protect the leg. You will get sand, grit, etc under them & they can chaffe & scald the legs over long distances. The SMB were never made with distance riding in mind. Leg boots are a (sometimes) necessary evil, but I would never CHOOSE to use them preventatively. They cause more trouble than they prevent if your horse isn't interfering.
