Please don't fall in an extremism position.
Here in Europe all our rides are FEI sanctioned and this is not true
1. that the rider may not talk to the VET; well you have to keep a certain distance, but all vets ask you how you feel your horse and if something goes wrong (a little bit dehydrated or nervous) the vet ask your opinion and you surely have to answer
2. everyone can help everyone on the trail; no question about that :):)

PS : I don't see very much differences between AERC and FEI rides; vetting is maybe a little bit more strictly enforced but is this bad ? In the last europena championship in 99 in Portugal, nobody did complain; I think the same is true for Compiegne where I didn't hear about a horse being pulled without reasons; their new system of re-check at the last vet is also not bad for our sport because if their is any suspission, the horse is not allowed to continue and I think (bur not sure) that all horses passing the last vet at Pierrefond did finish the ride.
