Need advice on stifle injury!

Anyone who has dealt with a stifle injury, please pass on any
words of wisdom/advice my way. My horse appears
to be starting a "chronic" stifle problem. Last fall, his right
hind hoof "fell out" behind him at the trot several times one
ride, and soon after that he got very reluctant to climb/descend 
hills. He had no signs of lameness at a trotout exam by my vet,
and she was at a loss if there really was anything wrong, but -I-
knew there was - he was just moving "wrong". An equine chiro found
that the source of his problems appeared to be his right stifle,
and acupuncture treatment seemed to take care of the problem.
Now, almost a year later, I'm seeing the same symptoms. The equine
chiro will be here in a few days, but I'm wondering what treatments
any of you have used on stifle injuries. I'm also baffled at the
"chicken or the egg" - I wonder if the slipping caused the injury, 
or the sore stifle caused the slipping....will see my farrier this
week and get his opinion too. Thanks in advance for any info/advice!
