RC: Neoprene in Winter

>Gee Angie, we use oil (a synthetic silicone based ) in
manufacturing>stuff..including neoprene and never had any
problems...maybe your >stuff is>the SBR?

All I know is, I had someone ask me how I made my neoprene crupper hold
out so well (10 years and counting). I said I'd never done *anything* to
it. Turns out the girl who asked had bought one just like it and put
vasaline on it trying to make it last.

After that, I heard that oil damages these type products or something
like that. I noticed that my Fortex feedpans got all ratty in the middle
after I started adding corn oil to the feed. Then, I used an easyboot to
cover an ichthammol wrap and after a week or so of that the ichthammol
ate through the heel strap. I now don't let any type oil get on these
products. My Ortho-Flex girths and crupper have lasted great. My oldest
girth got stiff inside (the nylon liner) and had a wrinkle that irritated
the horse, but the neoprene was fine. I cut the neoprene open, cut away
the wrinkle so that it became a shaped girth, then sewed the whole thing
back up. It looks pretty strange the stitches are so big, but I only
wanted it to last until the replacement could come. After I got the
replacement, I kept using the new "shaped" girth because it's still
hanging in there...2 years later.
