If your current farrier is a Good Joe, ask him if he'd be willing to train
you to do it, in view of the eventuality of his retirement. Then he can
watch you, talk you through it, and talk to you about your horses'
individual needs. (He may even be willing to hand down some of his tools to
you when the time comes <eg>.) I learned from my own farrier.
