how about finding a vet???   Or, more aptly, putting up with the ONLY VET for many miles around

Yup, same here.  One vet in the next state (AZ).  He's only 35 miles away from us, except that he won't come out our way except for Wednesdays when he does a kind of tour of the northern part of our county.  He *might* come for an emergency if you are close enough to him, but I can tell you from personal experience that 100 miles (which for here is not very far) is too far.

In his defense, he is a one man practice and if he has to leave it, the practice shuts down.  Unfortunately, he is not long out of vet school and is not all that knowledgable about equine athletes (but I hear he is fine with cows).  The good news is that you can get  penycillin & sulpha at most any little mom & pop store around here.  The bad news is that there's a lot of amateur vets around, too.  Lif
